僕は特にトロンボーンが好きな人間ではないんですが、このザッパの傑作ライヴにおけるブルース・ファウラーのボントロには本当に参りました。
まるでトランペットかというようなハイノート、キーでも付いてるのじゃないかと疑いたくなる正確すぎる音程。
おまけにザッパ御大の変態スコアもビシビシこなし、更にアドリブの歌心も素晴らしい。

しかしこの頃のザッパのバンドはカッコいいですねえ。
ジョージ・デュークやナポレオン・マーフィ・ブロック、チェスター・トンプソンなどの黒人ファンキー系を軸に据えて、お得意の超難度変態メロディ&キメを大放出！
レアグルーヴとアブストラクトヒップホップの、人力による早すぎた融合と言えば穿ち過ぎでしょうか。

ラルフ・ハンフリーとチェスタ、ルース・アンダーウッドによる超絶リズムも凄い。
とにかくラストの「ビ・バップ・タンゴ」のブルースの超絶ボントロワークと、猥雑に鳴らしまくるデュークのキーボードは圧巻です。

FZのライブは１度見てみたかった！　めまぐるしく変るリズム、デイズニー映画かトムとジェリーか何かのＢＧＭか、はたまたオペラか、限りなく黒っぽく、ワイルド。何でもありのごった煮のようだけれど、ぐいぐい引っ張る骨太さ、これぞプロ！Hot Ratsから７０年代前半がこの人の最も脂の乗った時期だったと思う。FZのライブならこれ。

このアルバムはザッパの数ある作品のなかでもトップクラスでしょう。特にザッパのギターが好きなひとには「ホット・ラッツ」、「興奮の一夜」、「アポストロフィー」、「万物同サイズの法則」と共に必需品です。そして最近、発見したんですが、ドン・エリス（DON　ELLISジャズのトランペッターで１９５９年頃からエリック・ドルフィー、ポール・ブレイなどと演奏していた。変拍子の神様で’７０年代後半に早死にされました）さんの「アット・フィルモア」「ティアーズ・オブ・ジョイ」がＣＤ化されてこの２枚を聴いてみて思ったんですが、ジャズとロックのフィールドは違えどもザッパのロキシーとアンサンブルにかなりの共通点があります。ツインドラム＋パーカッションのリズム隊スタイルや、変拍子中心の意表をつく曲展開など。そして、ドラマーが同一人物でした。その名はラルフ・ハンフリー（Ralph　Humphrey）さんです。もっと調べてみるとドン・エリス楽団を抜けたラルフさんに、ジョージ・デュークさんよりザッパのバンドに入らないかと誘いがあったと語っておられました。（ドラムマガジンより）やはり、ザッパさんにも元ネタがあったのかと妙に納得してしまいました。「ロキシー…」は本当に凄いことをサラッと演奏していて改めて凄いライブアルバムだなあとおもいます。ギターも全編最高です。個人的には、このアルバムを始めて買って聴いてからついに３０年になりました。来年の2月にはライブ（京大西部講堂一番前で）見てから３０年を向かえようとしています。ザッパとこんなに長く付き合うことになるなんて想像もしなかった、ほんと。これからも聴きます。ありがとうございました。
