Thanks to the surprise radio airplay of "Don't Eat that Yellow Snow," Apostrophe introduced a whole new audience to the music of Frank Zappa in the early '70s. Like its companion set, Over-Nite Sensation, this album found Zappa producing highly polished jazz-rock, mixing tales of absurd characters with musical showmanship and snarling guitar work. The first half of the album is a sort of mini-concept album, relating the adventures of an Eskimo named Nanook, and the second half features such Zappa classics as "Cosmik Debris" and "Stink-Foot." --Andrew Boscardin

まず、１、２，３，４、５曲目までが特に最高。ザッパのスタジオ録音の中では１番好きです。メンバーも私のベスト・メンバーの録音です。ドラムス＝ラルフ・ハンフリー、マリンバ＝ルース・アンダーウッド、サックス＝イアン・アンダーウッド（夫婦で参加）、ベース＝トム・ファウラー、トロンボーン＝ブルース・ファウラー（兄弟で参加）です。特に、ラルフ・ハンフリーのドラムは凄すぎ！「アルフォンゾ…」あたりは本当に超絶ドラムと超絶マリンバ炸裂！この次の『ロキシー＆エルスウェアー』でラルフとルースのリズムは、最高潮に達する。最近このあたりの映像が出ましたDVD『ストックホルム・シンドローム』（１９７３年ライブ）というやつ。動くイアン・アンダーウッド、ジャンリュック・ポンティーが見れるだけでなくロキシーでのラルフ・ハンフリーのドラムスとルース・アンダーウッドのマリンバを映像で髣髴させます。話はこのアルバムに戻って６曲目からは寄せ集めで６．はドラムス＝ジョン・ゲリン、７．はセッションでドラムス＝ジム・ゴードン、ベース＝ジャック・ブルースです。残念ながら、この２人はこの曲のみの参加です。８．９．は恐らく少し前の録音でドラムス＝エインズリー・ダンバーでしょう。

実はもう30年以上前に初めて買ったZAPPAがこれ。ZAPPAマニアへ私を導いてくれた傑作です。
そうそうたるテクニシャンをバックに歌うZAPPAは本当にのびのびとしています。初心者の方にも聞きやすくてお勧めです。
ただ残念なのはCD化された時にUncle Remusの最後の格好良いギターソロが一部カットされてしまった事。これは'93 Remaster盤も同じ。是非アナログか20bit 24K Disc(アナログマスタおこし)で聞いて欲しいですね。なんであんな事したんですか、ザッパ先生。

ザッパの顔がドアップに写っていて前から気になっていたアルバムでしたがついに勇気を出して買ってみました。
１曲目はベストに入っていて高校２年生のときに何度も聞いていました。７曲目はかなりカッコいい。一言でいうと『極めて重厚で図太いたたずまい』です。１度聞いたら頭からはなれなくなるフレーズです。
この1曲のためにアルバムを買っても損はしませんよ。もちろんほかの曲も好きです。１から４曲目の組曲は流れが軽快でだんだん曲のテンションがあがってきます。
