70年の本作はザッパのギタープレイが全面的にフィーチャーされたストレートなロック・アルバムに仕上っている。ハードにかき鳴らすギターは、まさにザッパ版ハードロックともいえる趣がある。とかく「難解」とのイメージがつきまとうザッパであるが、喰わず嫌いのザッパ初心者も本作を聴けばその偏見が覆されること請け合いである。

ご存知、奇才かつ鬼才のフランク・ザッパによる1970年の作品です。ザッパの音楽はとかく難解だといわれますが、ザッパにしては比較的わかりやすく個人的には聴きやすいのではないかと思います。これから初めてザッパを聴こうという奇特な人にお勧めです。

中近東風のフレーズで怪しくスネークインしてくる冒頭の「Transylvania Boogie」がなんと言っても秀逸の出来。エフェクターの使い方などは流石に時代を感じさせますが、発想、プレイ、フレーズなどどこをとっても、やはり尋常ではない怪しい魅力に満ちています。音質の悪さはオリジナル盤によるもので、これも「時代感覚」としてご容赦くださいませ。

ところで、日本盤でははじめは「チュンガの復讐」というタイトル帯がついていたはずですが、再発売では「チャンガの復讐」になっていました。わたし、ずっと騙されていたわけで、赤面の行ったり来たりです…。

プレイボタンを押すといきなりザッパのギターが火を噴いたようにうなり始める。吸血鬼で知られるトランシルバニアのブギだ。かなり硬派な印象を受けたが、９番のようなちょっと抜けた曲もある。
よくザッパは古さを感じさせないとかいわれるが、このアルバムは例外でいい意味で古い感じがする。本気でロックを楽しんでいる様子が伝わってくる。このアルバムのザッパのギターの音色は特にエッジが利いていて好きだ。７曲目のチャンガの逆襲はいいね。ほんとに逆襲って感じがする。
