そのアルバムがどれも音楽史に残る大傑作と言えるフランク・ザッパ作品の中でも
トップクラスの出来を誇る、初期マザーズ・オブ・インベンションの大傑作。

このアルバムはまずWPLJという底抜けに明るく楽しげな酒賛歌のヴォーカルソングで
スタート。その後、サンドイッチ状に配された、チャーミングで少しコミカルな、
そしてどこか淋しげで郷愁を誘われる現代音楽風室内音楽を積み重ねながら、次第に
リスナーをシリアスな緊張状態、興奮状態へと導いていく。そしてその緊張と興奮は、
18分を超えるインスト曲、「俺が住んでいた小さな家」で頂点を迎える。
ここでかき鳴らされるバイオリン――ザッパが保釈金を払って刑務所から出してやった
天才、シュガー・ケイン・ハリスの演奏――はすさまじいの一語である。
そして、その大作が終わると、最初のWPLJに呼応するように、スローな失恋ソングである
ヴァラリーのメロディアスなヴァーカルと演奏が流れてきて、緊張から解放された心は
そこで癒され、ザッパ作品としては珍しく、涙が出るようなせつなさ、懐かしさ、そして
こんなにも素晴らしい音楽のひとときが終わりをつげるもの悲しさを感じさせてくれる。

このアルバムは、何かをしながら聴いても楽しめるのだが、できれば大音量で、さまざまな
楽器や小道具のチャーミングな音を楽しみながら、真剣に向き合って聴いて欲しい。
そんな気にさせる、シリアスだがノスタルジック作品であり、その前衛的な手法と、
ザッパ一流のドゥーワップサウンドが最高のバランスで配置された見事な構成の一枚と言える。

音楽を愛するあらゆるリスナーに聴いてもらいたい一枚。私の中では、ザッパの作品群は
他のアーティストのアルバム群のはるか上にそびえる、天国に連なる巨大な山脈を形成しているが、
本作は、そのアヴァンギャルドさと構成の緻密さ、そして初期マザーズの終焉を感じさせるもの悲しさなどが
あいまった、それら山脈の中でもひときわ高くそびえる頂のひとつであると言える。

このような天上の音楽とも言える作品を残したフランク・ザッパは真の天才である。
彼の音楽を狂ったように聴きだしてすでに25年以上になるが、いまだにこれだけの新鮮さ、
感動を与えてくれる彼の音楽とは何なのか……何度聞いても衝撃に打たれる古びない一枚である。

こんな素晴らしい作品がレコード時代は一度も日本盤にならなかったとは……
星は５つでなく20個はあげたい。

　本作は、冗談抜きに、音楽史上に名を残すれレベルの作品だと断言します。よく「音の洪水」と言う表現を耳にしますが、本作を音の洪水と言わずして何を他に言うのか！と思わされます。4と6がオススメです。しかしやはり特筆しているのはthe little house i used to live inです。すさまじいです。全てが計算されていて、予想もつかないメロディの中に美しさがある。たいていは激しいなら激しいで終わってしまうんですが彼の作品には必ずどこか美しさがあります。
　また、zappaを聴いた後にbiches brew以降のmilesを聴くと、彼がいかにzappaに影響を受けたかを理解出来ます。正直、個人的には、当時最も才能あったのはzappa（beatles,stones,zep,jimi他以上に）だと思います。が、そこで大衆性が問題になります。
　が、大衆性について書こうと何度もチャレンジしたんですが字数がどうしても収まりません。ので簡単に分かりにくく。
・売れたから良いってもんじゃない。
・でも売れなきゃ困る。
・じゃあ何が良いのか？
・良いものは良い。つまり先入観無しで曲のみで評価する事。
・でも良いと理解できるようになるにはたくさん音楽を聴かなきゃいけない。そもそもある分野のオタクくらいにならないと良し悪しの判断なんかできないはず。素人と玄人の評価が等価なわけが無い。
・zappaは最後まで芸術性のみを追及した。故に数少ない芸術家である
