じつは僕も、これが最初に買ったザッパでした
(『We're Only in it for the Money』との2in1CDで)。

でも、僕は一発で好きになりましたね。『ドルーピー』シリーズで
有名なアニメ作家、テックス・エイヴリーのシュールでハチャメチャな
ドタバタ感覚を映像でなく、音で表現した世界といえばいいかな。
まだ小学校にも行ってなかった頃、テレビで毎日『トムとジェリー』と
一緒に『ドルーピー』を見て腹の皮がよじれるほど笑っていた僕には、
とても親しみを感じるアルバムだったのです。

なので、これから聴く方には＜現代音楽的な…＞とか＜20世紀を
代表する音楽家ザッパの…＞とかいった能書きをひとまず頭から
追い払って、たとえば『ボーボボ』を読むようなつもりで接することを
お薦めします。その深さはおいおいわかってきますから、まずは
「くっだらねー！」とゲラゲラ笑いながら聴きましょう。

　今から３０年以上前、少年が初めて勝ったザッパのアルバムがこの作品です。理由は輸入盤バーゲンで安かったから。
　自宅に持ち帰って早速聞いた彼は、思わず頭を抱え込みました。コラージュ、カットアップはもちろん、テープディレイ何てことも知らなかった少年の耳には、ただただ難解な音の塊でしかなかったのです。

　月日は経ち、かつての少年もりっぱな中年男性となり、くだんのレコードはとっくに中古盤屋に売り払われ、彼の手元にはザッパ先生公認のＣＤが置かれています。さてそのＣＤが素晴らしく聞けたかというと、これがやっぱり余り面白くないのです。

　かつての少年は、こう考えました。ザッパの現代音楽、あるいはそのもどきの様な音楽は、その種のものとしても余り面白くないんじゃなかろうか。はたまた、こちらの耳の経験値が上がった結果、この音楽の生煮えの実験臭さが気にいらないのだろうか。

　いずれにせよ、少年とザッパとの出会いは不幸だったのです。この２０世紀を代表する音楽家の魅力に開眼するのに、遠く、長い道のりを必要としたからです。
Ｐ．Ｓ．老婆心からのおせっかい。７０枚余りを数えるザッパの作品の中で本作は最後のほうに聞くのがベターでしょう。

ザッパの初めてのソロ。
この作品までザッパは、自分の名前がフランシスだと勘違いしていたため、名前の表記がフランシスのままだ。

内容はたったの二曲しかない。
まるで、マイク・オールドフィールドみたいだ。

が、非常に楽しく聴ける一枚。
起伏のある展開、随所に盛り込まれたセリフ、ユニークな構成。
かなりザッパらしい作品だ。

第一、聴いてて飽きないから何回でも楽しめる。
そういう音楽って意外と無いものですよ。
