例えばソウル・ミュージックと言っても、所謂ルーツ的なものもあれば、英国ソウルのようにそのエッセンスを軽やかに/お洒落に昇華(消化)したスタイルもあるかと思います。
私自身がB.オーシャンを知ったのは本作('84年作)からでしたが、ソウル・ミュージックをかなり軽やかにし、ダンサブルなビートとエフェクトされたその音、B.オーシャン自身のスウィートな声といった混合要素が結構お気に入りでした。[5]辺りはジャンル的にはロック的ですらありますね。
[1]はもとより、[5]、[9]などがチャートを賑わせた結果、アルバム自体もトップ10入りし、まさにB.オーシャンの代表作となりました。
＃更に[1]ではグラミー賞(Best Male R&B Vocal Performance)も手中
＃にしているのですね。
その後はあまり積極的に追いかけることはなかったのですが、この辺りもフッと聴きたくなる事があります(^^;
閑話：
ギターとしてクレジットに見えるエディ・マルティネス。この人って、あのトゥエンティー・ナイン(その昔、レニー・ホワイトが組んでたフュージョン・バンド)に居た人ですかね？

‘Billy Ocean’ と言えば1Carribean Queen をイメージするくらい、彼の代表曲であり彼自身のルーツでもあるらしい。細かいことはよく分からないが、確かに独特の雰囲気のある曲だ。後にヒット曲を何曲か出してるが、このような雰囲気の曲は1Carribean Queen が最初で最後のような気がする。個人的には、ハードロック調な味付けが洒落ている5Loverboyが好きだ。
