ザ・クルセイダースのピークを捉えた最高傑作であり、数あるライヴ盤の中でも傑出した一枚。70年代初期、ハービー・ハンコックのヘッド・ハンターズやドナルド・バードのブラックバーズなどと並んでブラック・ファンクとかクロスオーバー（今でいうフュージョン）とか呼ばれていた頃で、当初ジャズ・クルセイダースと名乗っていた彼等が頭の「ジャズ」をとって、ギターやエレキベースを導入してファンク色を強めた時期のライヴ。Ｌ.Ａ.の有名なクラブＲＯＸＹでの収録。スティックス・フーパーの独特なグルーヴ感のある「手足ばらばら」ドラムに絡むゲストのマックス・ベネットの「超イナたい」ベース、「ハードバップ色と南部テキサスの香りプンプン」のウィルトン・フェルダーのテナーサックスとウェインヘンダーソンのトロンボーン、ジョー・サンプルの「キラキラした玉をころがしたような」フェンダーローズの音色、そしてもう一人のゲストでまだ売れる前のラリー・カールトンはもうこの頃から最高のバッキングとリードソロを披露している。そして何より最高なのがこの日のオーディエンス。ＭＣのウェインとの絡みや、後半のスロー~ミディアム曲における演奏への反応の良さは、相互作用でバンドを鼓舞し、さらにすばらしい演奏を引き出したに違いない。「ああ、この場にいたかった」と思わせる最高のライヴ･シューティングの一つ。

この頃のクルセイダーズのスタジオ盤はどれも文句なしですが、ライブの傑作がこの「スクラッチ」です。ライブバンドとしての彼等の実力が存分に発揮され、文句のつけようがありません。ゲストのカールトンとマックス　ベネットも良い。特にスティックス　フーパーののりといったら。全５曲と短いですが、どれも最高です。とりわけ、3のウィルトン　フェルダーのブロウ4のウイルトンとウェインのサックスとトロンボーンの一分間ユニゾン（呼吸しながら吹くという特殊奏法らしい。それと知るまでは、二人は何ていう肺活量の持ち主かと本気で思った）、カールトンのおしゃれなソロとオブリ、5のメンバー紹介のカッコ良さ、など本当に聴き所満載です。是非お試しあれ。

最近また復活したせいもあって、クルセイダーズを聴きまくってます。これは非常の想い出の多いアルバムで、高校３年生の時友人宅でこれを聴きながら酒のんで、青春時代（笑）にふさわしい、受験、将来、恋愛、下ネタと多くを語り合ったのをおもいだします。それはともかく、ライヴの彼等の熱いグルーヴ（特にＳ・フーパーがすごい）を体感するにはもってこいです。曲数は５曲と少ないですが、名曲揃いです。また「Ｓo far away」ではウィルトンとウェインの一分間におよぶ吹き続け（特殊奏法だそうで、初めて聴いたときはこいつらの肺活量はどうなっているんだ、と思いました）、ラリーのしゃれたギターソロが聴けます。また、「Way back home」でのメンバー紹介は最高にカッコ良くて渋いです。クルセイダーズをまだ聴いたことのない方、このアルバムから入ってみては如何でしょうか。フュージョンの名盤です。
