タイトルのUnder Northern Lightsはコンサートの最初の曲だったことも多い。このCDの曲は帰国直後のコンサートの定番曲がほとんど。
Walls of the Caveでの和さんの尺八も「ジョセフに捧ぐ」という、コンサートでの氏のコメントが思い起こされる。

アルバムの「サブテーマ？」といえるような、星明かりから朝もや煙る夜明け、そして１日が始まるといった流れが明確に感じられる。

この中の”Ruins of Sonora”をＮＨＫ-ＦＭで８９年頃にエアチェックテープでたまたま聞いたのが彼女を知る最初のきっかけでした。この中のタイトル曲「北斗」も同じ様にNHk-FMで知ることとなります。
”Ruins of Sonora”は渋さと繊細さの絶妙のバランスが良く、「かっこいい」という言葉が当てはまります。録音したテープは何度聞いたかわかりません。この当時はまだ彼女がピアニストであることすら知りませんでした。彼女の２枚目のアルバムですが、実験的なようでどこか優しげな印象を持つ曲が多いです。「Flight of Engels」「Gate」なども好きな曲です。
後にリマスターされたものを買ったのですが、アメリカで最初に出たオリジナル版と聞き比べて見たかったので購入しました。スリーブデザインとしてはこちらの方が好きです。

このアルバムを最初に聞いたとき('９０年頃)「これってアニメのサントラ？」というのが正直な感想。日本人のオタク向き音楽かと思っていたのだが、後に音楽雑誌を読み西海岸で人気がある事を知った。アメリカ人がこういうのを聴くとは信じられなかったのである。不覚。
