5.0 out of 5 stars プログレらしい陰影と心に残る楽曲群, 2005/8/7
この作品「運命のカード」は、ルネッサンスの傑作アルバム群中でもプログレらしい陰影というか、内包的なものを最も強く感じる作品のひとつです。その陰影は曲と歌詞のマッチングの良さから来るものですが、曲、歌詞の良さとアニー・ハスラムの透明なボーカルは、同時にこの作品を高水準の音楽にしています。アルバムが出た順番として、前後を「Ashes Are Burning（燃ゆる灰）」と「Scheherazade & Other Stories（シェラザード夜話）」という、とても有名な２作品にはさまれているために、わりと目立たないのかもしれません。でもこれも高水準の作品を作り続ける彼らならではのこと。ふつうだったら、本作品はたいへんな名盤と持ち上げられているのではないでしょうか。Mother Russia, Black Flame, I Think of Youなど、このアルバム中の楽曲群も時を越えて心に残ります。

前作の英国田園的なフォーク感覚や次作のおとぎ話のようなファンタジックな世界と比べると重厚でとにかく冷え切ったような雰囲気が漂っています。そんな本作を端的に表わしているのが４曲目「Black Flame」と６曲目「Mother Russia」。前者は本当に黒い炎が燃え上がっているかのような悲劇的で暗いイメージが浮かび上がります。そして後者は彼らの代表曲の一つでイントロのピアノから凍てついたロシアの風景を想像させられ、アニーの歌声はその世界に届くように壮大に歌い上げます。
彼らの最高傑作ではないかもしれませんが、私的には一番好きなアルバムです。
