先ごろ３８年間の現役騎手にピリオドを打った岡部騎手の名エッセイシリーズの２巻目である。平成３年~５年にかけてサンケイスポーツに掲載された週報が時系列で編集されている。時代的には、トウカイテイオー、ビワハヤヒデ、シンコウラブリィなどの時代。名コンビ藤沢厩舎についてはお得意さんと文中で語っている。岡部騎手のファンの方は勿論、競馬のお好きな方、スポーツエッセイのお好きな方には是非読んでほしいと思う。この頃の岡部騎手はまさに日本のチャンピオン・ジョッキーで、平成３年に２度目のＪＲＡ騎手大賞を受賞しており、頂点に君臨した時期といえる。その現役最高のジョッキーが、ここまで喋っていいのかと思うほど、ストレートに競馬界を語ってゆく。競馬とは、馬という動物と共に作り上げるスポーツであり勝負の世界である。言葉を喋らない馬の代わりにジョッキーが代弁していると言える。競馬は、スポーツ新聞を見ても、随分ページをめくらないと記事をみつけられない。ところが東京競馬場にはＧ１ともなると１０万人を超す観客が詰め掛ける。人気の割りに扱いが低く置かれているのではないだろうか。これをチャンピオン・ジョッキーが、オピニオン・リーダーとして自らが競馬の現場を語ることで、魅力を読者に伝えようとしているのが伝わってくる。競馬場ごとの戦略、次回の騎乗馬の評価、競走馬のタイムの考え方など第一人者が語ることによってそれは運を天に任せる賭け事から競技に変わってゆく。ヨーロッパやアメリカの競馬と比較し、日本の競馬の問題点をＪＲＡに対して直言しているのも驚くとともに岡部騎手のチャンピオンとしての責任感を感じるのである。自分自身を客観視し、冷静な語り口はスポーツ選手のエッセイとしては最上のものといえる。これほどの人物が競馬界を引っ張っていたことを多くの人に知ってもらいたい。
