'80年代付近の昔のPCゲームを現代のOSで
再現するプロジェクト(EGG)の公式ガイドブック。
「EGGとは？」から始まり、ゲームジャンルの起源、
当時の時代背景を丁寧に解説。
ときどき、丁寧すぎる文章があるが、
それは現代の世代に訴えるためか。

ゲーム紹介はジャンルごとにまとめられており、
１タイトル１ページ程度で構成されているのが、読みやすい。

ゲーム内容のみならず、当時の反響やゲームの攻略、
ハードの制約、プロテクト(!)の話題等、
様々な視点でゲームを語っている文面は熱い。
想像で書かれている箇所がなく、
当時をしっかりと体験してきたライター諸氏によって
書かれている文章が、よりいっそう話を盛り上げている。

また、ハードの制約が多かったパソコンにおける

PSGやFM音源のサウンド、
グラフィックの高速描写の技術等に関心がある方、
本書はそんな切り口からもゲームを紹介しているので、オススメ。

この本の発行日時点で、
ラインナップされているソフトのみが紹介されているため、
今日まで、毎月追加されているゲームまでも網羅できない点が残念。
新しく追加されたゲームの紹介も読みたいところ。

最後に、グラフィックの素晴らしさを伝えるのに、白黒印刷は×かと。
掲載写真が多いだけに残念。価格が張るのは内容を凝縮したためか。

８０年台後半のホビーパソコン…ＰＣ８８、ＦＭ７といった、８ビットマシンは、家庭用ゲームでは味わえない意欲作、実験作、失敗作！？が、多数リリースされていました。
この本は、それらゲームを現在のマシンへ配信するサービス、「プロジェクトＥＧＧ」のガイドブックなのです。

しかし、ベーマガ、テクポリ、ポプコム、コンプティークなんかを読んでいた方なら、ＥＧＧでゲームを買う気がまったく無くても、ソフトの紹介文を読むだけで当時のことが思い出し、感慨にふけること間違いなしです。
ただ、値段の割にボリュームが少なく、白黒印刷で紙質も多少悪い（？）ところが残念なところです。
