・英語学習の中級者以上では、単語の逐語訳を知っているだけでなく、ライティングやスピーキングで的確な単語・用法を使い分けたいという風になると思います。そのためには、その語のもつ本質的な意味や使い分けについて書いてある英英辞書にあたる必要があると思うのですが、この本はそうした英英辞書的な解説が日本語で書かれています。

・そのため、単語集につき物の無理強いして「覚える」というイメージではなく、英単語の深みを理解して「楽しむ」というイメージがぴったりです。

・また非常に細かいことですが、もともと派生語や類義語が付されている上に、余白が十分にあるため、関連語を自分で書き込んでいって育てることもできます。

単語は単語カードに書き写して何度も反復する という杉村太郎さん提唱の方法に則って学習をしているので本書をデータベースとしてしか活用していないのですが、如何にして記憶を長く保持するか? 使える単語力とは何か? という筆者のこだわりが惜しげも無く盛り込まれており、方法論を学ぶだけでも価値があると思われる、非常に味のある単語集だと思っています。「習得度が中レベルであると、単語を見ただけでは意味まで思い出せないが文脈から意味が分かるので知ってるような積もりになり結局実践では使えない知識である」との解説が冒頭に有りますが、これはとても重要な指摘と思われ全くもって共感を覚えます。難易度に関して、8000語レベルの本書は最高レベルの難しさに位置します。統計によると8000語レベルの単語がTOEICに登場するのは2.7%程度との事であり、この事実を鑑みてもTOEICの得点のみを目標に据えるならば本書は難しすぎるのでは無いかと思われます。同レベルの本との比較において本書は、"TOEIC TEST必修1200語"や"速読速聴英単語 Advanced 1000"よりやや易しく、"TOEFLテスト英単語3800"と同程度といった感じではないかと思っています。自分は主にニュース英語のリスニング力強化の観点から学習をしていますが、石井先生の書物だけに、言うまでも無く大きな効果を発揮しております。リスニングテープが無い事だけは、残念でなりませんが...(toeic=845点)。

TOEIC800点台の方が900点を突破するために買うとしたら、この本は役に立ちません。こんなに難しい単語を覚えるのは、時間の無駄だし覚えきれません。読者にアピールするために｢TOEIC900｣という言葉をタイトルに入れたのだと思いますが、それを信じて買うと痛い目にあいます。
でも実際にTIMEやNEWSWEEK、英語のジャーナルなどを読んでいると、この本に出てくる単語にたびたび出くわします。以前に辞書で調べたはずなのに意味を忘れてしまったなあ…でも結構、重要だったはずなのに…と思うような単語がたくさん載っています。私にはとても有益でした。
TOEICには全く向かないけれど、上級者(英語オタク？)にとっては喜ばしい本です。
