那覇の空港でも、わしたショップでも買える「教科書」。
体裁も内容も、本のタイトルも文字通り「教科書」。
歴史教科書のくせに、此れほどエキサイティングな本はそうそうない。

著者の執筆動機、痒いところに手の届く記述、等々、含蓄は深い。

那覇空港に到着したらすぐにでも買い求めるべき一冊。

本書に目を通すか、否かで沖縄旅行の充実度が異なるはずである。

この本は

第1部:先史時代
第2部:古琉球
第3部:近世琉球
第4部:近代沖縄
第5部:戦後沖縄

の五部構成となっています。

琉球列島の起源から、グスク時代を経てからの琉球王国の成立、島津の侵入、琉球処分、ソテツ地獄、米軍占領と祖国復帰運動など、
非常に分かりやすく、すぐれた著述でまとめられています。
初学者にとって少し分かりにくい事柄には番号が振られ、ページの脇のほうに注釈がついていますので、
「これから沖縄の歴史について一から学ぶぞ！」という方にもおすすめです。

また、「歴史を探究する」や、本文で話題に上った事柄をより詳しく説明するコラムは、とても面白くて、読み応えがあります。
教科書本文を読むのが面倒な方は、これらを読むだけでもお酒の席の格好のネタになるかもしれません。

ただしかし、個人的には時代が下るにつれ、著者の思想が強くなっているように思えます。（悪い言い方をすれば「偏っている」）
しかし、近代においてかなり特殊な経験をした沖縄を語るには、このような「著者の思想」が出るのも、ある意味でやむをえないことでしょう。

日本史の中の沖縄のように、表面だけを紹介するのではなく、かなり踏み込んだ内容となっていますからね。

まあその点を踏まえておけば、いい本なので星五つとします。
