フランスの殖民地アルジェリアの下層階級が、何故下層のままでいるのかについての研究である。定職を持たず日雇いでい続けるのは、本人達の望むところではない。
当事者視点では、教育を受けていないことによって、この環境から抜け出せないと思っている。
しかしながら、ブルデューは彼等が将来を予測する事は神を冒涜する事と同じであると考えている事に原因があると考える。つまり、収穫の予測をすることは本来神のみぞ知る内容であって、人間が行う事は、やってはいけないことである。さらに消費行動に関してもケチと評価される基準が独特のものであるために、適切な経済活動を行なえないような状態になっているといえる。
このような思考は、まさにハビトゥスによって培われたものであり、このハビトゥスを変更する事は困難な事である。このようにして、小作人は小作人のままであり、食うや喰わずの生活を続けざるをえなくなり、子供達の教育へ影響していく事になる。
このようにして、世代を超えて社会階層は安定して、階層を飛び越える事はきわめて困難になるというものである。
これは、日本の田舎でも同じ事が言えると思われる。経済が発展しない地域は、それを招いている部分も少なからずあるだろる。

本書は、著者自ら述べるように研究書というよりは、世界各国に翻訳される事を望んでいたことから、データや議論などを極力最小限なものにとどめている。したがって、本書からその研究を他のものへ応用する目的で使うのは、難しいかもしれない。
また、若干であるがブルデューの本の割には、理論的枠組みが若干弱いという印象も持った。
