About the Author

Legendary in the field of children's literature, as an editor as well as the author of more than seventy picture books, Charlotte Zolotow has a unique understanding of both childhood and children.

Yan Nascimbene was born in 1949 and has divided most of his life between Italy, France, and the United States. Nascimbene has exhibited worldwide and twice won the Graphic Awards at the International Book Fair in Bologna. He is married with three children and presently lives in California.

人の目を気にし、人がどう思うかという事に縛られた人達の中で、クロケットおじいさんは小さな枯れかけたもみの木を育てます。
クロケットおじいさんに、たっぷりの愛情を注がれ育っていくもみの木を通して周囲の人達の心もほどけていきます。

ラストのシーンに、このもみの木に集まってきている、色とりどりの小鳥達と、クリスマスキャロルを歌うコーラス隊のしずかな調べが、とても美しく心に響きます。
このしずかなクリスマスの美しい情景が、やさしく心に染み入る一冊です。

クロケットさんは流行を追ったりする人ではなく、素朴で、やさしい人です。周りの人から見たら彼は変わり者に見えるかもしれません。しかし、彼は、本当に大切なことを知っています。それは他を愛し、大切にする心です。

彼はまた、強い人間だと思う。人からどう思われようと、自分が大切だと思うことを信じ実行しすばらしい効果をもたらしているから。彼は物を見抜く力があります。

私はクリスチャンではないけれど、クリスマスシーズンが大好きです。ディケンズの「クリスマスキャロル」の中でスクルージュの甥の言葉にあるように、親切な気持ちになり人を赦してやり、情ぶかくなる楽しい時節だから。
