現代知の先端におけるマルクスの意義。じつはこれが本書の問題提起だ。もちろんマルクスなんて古いというのも、いまこそマルクスというのも自由。
本書のいうところをややひきのばしてみると、「言語が知をつくり、言語が対象をつくるのだ、だから、対象そのものを問うことはナンセンスだ」とする現代の不可知論をマルクスは、根底から批判しているという。
マルクスの核心は「労働する身体」にあり、そこを起点としてもろもろの事実を批判すること。ここに現代の背景知レベルでのマルクスの意味を本書はみいだす。
類書とくらべて本書の特徴は、「意識と言語」という現代思想の中心テーマに切り込んで、言語にたいする物神崇拝を批判することによって、マルクスの「労働」を再発見している点にある。

経済学的信仰である新古典派経済学の原子論や、主観と客観の二分法的実証主義に対して、現代知の先端が、社会による知の拘束性を問う「共同主観性」論にあるとすれば、この知の先端の系譜と、本書は真摯に対決している、といってもよいだろう。この対決がすべて成功しているとはいえないし、スターリン批判の部分はややとっつきにくいかもしれないが、検討すべき多くの論点が提出されていて、現代社会認識の方法論に関心がある人にはお勧め。
廣松渉・丸山圭三郎・アルチュセールといった現代思想の大御所だけではなく、心理学者の浜田寿美男まで論じるあたりの目配りも楽しい。批判はなかなか痛快だ。
