しばらく見てないなあと思っていたら（古い昔のは持っているのですが、傷んでいたので探していたのです）、どうやらこれもちびくろさんぼと同様差別問題があった絵本だったのですね。お話そのものには何の偏見もなく「才能をいかせ！」みたいな元気をくれる本で、小さいころから今も大好きです。2色使いでシンプルなところもお話にとても合っています。

子供のころ、大好きだった絵本。
でも、大人になってから、また読みたいと思って探した時、どうしても見つからなかった。
あとで知ったが、「シナ」という言葉や絵柄に差別的なところがあるということで、絶版になっていたらしい。
そんなわけで、もう二度と読むことはできないものと諦めていたが、ある時、絵本専門店でたまたま見つけることができた。
どうやら、いつのまにか復刻されていたようである。
久々に、何十年ぶりかで読んだが、子供のころのワクワク感はそのまま。
「海の水を飲み込んでいるのはとても苦しいのに、なんでこの男の子は早く帰ってこないの！？」っていうハラハラする気持ちも、子供の時と同じ。
そして、きょうだいが力を合わせて難局を乗り切っていくのが、とても痛快。
復刻されて、本当に嬉しい。
出版社の英断に感謝と称賛の気持ちでいっぱいある。

私が子供の時に、画家だった叔母（母の妹）がうれしそうに買ってきた本の中の一冊でした。
この本は読んで楽しむというよりも、絵を見て楽しむというか…奇怪な絵だったな。
なぜだろう。見慣れないシナ服を着た人たちの話しだったからかな。
でも、面白かったです。
