まさに、このようなテーマで行なわれた立花教授の特別講義のレジュメのようです。
序章はガイダンスにあたり、第1章以下の概略の説明と共に、
「何故、旅に出るのか？」、
「何故、旅をしなければならないのか？」について、氏の考察が続きます。
この章を読むだけでも、充分、本1冊分の価値があります。

続く各章では、氏の、様々な時代の、様々な場所（日本を含む世界各地）における旅の記録なのですが、
氏が断わりを入れているとおり、「何を見た、何を食べた、なにをした」といった類の、
単なる旅行記ではありません。
これらのことを契機として、『立花隆が、何を、どのように考えたか（思索したか）』の記録です。

つまり、我々読者は各章を読むことで、
「氏がどのようにして、自らを現在の立花隆たらしむべく創っていったのか」
を探る旅に出掛ける事になります。

氏が、「この世界を本当に認識しようと思ったら、自らの肉体を移動させること、
つまり必ず旅が必要になる」と言うところに、
私は氏のジャーナリストとしての、知の巨人としての原点を感じました。

勝手に氏を「心の師匠」と仰ぐ私にとって、この本は待ちに待った本です。
中に納められた写真、特にキリスト教に関係する写真も素晴らしいです。
圧倒的な分量にも関わらず濃密な内容の文章と、ビジュアル的にも楽しめる写真を併せて、
間違いなくお買い得です。

　筆者が過去に書いた紀行もの（といっても観光案内じゃなくて…って話は序論冒頭に出てくる。）を集めたもの。
　書かれてから２０年以上時間が経過したものもあり、現時点においてそのまま受け取っていいものか正直言って分からないものもある。せっかくこんな形にまとめるのであれば、それぞれの文章についての補論のような形で、最近の情勢を踏まえたコメントがついていたらいいのに。とはいえ、内容は面白い。
　その一方で、文化芸術面、政治面諸々における知的能力や蓄積の圧倒的な差に絶望感のようなものを感じたのも事実。ワイン、キリスト教音楽etc。立花さんと同じ地域を旅し、同じ人と話す機会があったとしても（そもそもそこに至る同レベルの行動力もないが…）、とてもじゃないけどこんな地点まで考えることなどできない。その意味で、改めて『巨人』立花隆のとんでもなさ・奥深さを感じることになるはず。（やや鼻につくところもあるけど）
　日常的なことから少し離れたところに連れて行ってくれるので、現に旅ができない忙しい人にこそお勧めかも。

昔から立花隆のファンで、著作はほぼすべて読んでいるつもりだが、この本には圧倒された。「幅が広く、奥が深い」という著者の特質がもっともよくあらわれた本ではないか？　とくに、20年以上前から、「世界帝国の首都＝ニューヨーク」と「現代史の最大の攪乱要因＝パレスチナ」に注目し、対比する形で研究を続けてきたところはさすがだ。
