麒麟をはじめ、空想の動物を、幻の動物について、その生息地について記述している。
ハリーポッタを楽しむための背景知識が満載である。
こういう仕掛けがあると、ハリーポッターが２５６倍楽しめる。

ハリー達が実際にホグワーツで使っている、ニュート・スキャマンダー執筆の教科書…という設定の本です。カバーといい本の大きさといい、一目見て「可愛い！」と思えるものです。何より、中身が面白い！様々な幻獣の項目がアルファベット順に並んでおり、個々の幻獣の生息地、身体的特徴、行動などが記載されています。いずれも興味深いもので、幻獣好きな私にはたまらないです。そして、「こういう教科書を使った授業を受けたい」と思わせます。「著者について」、「序論」、「魔法動物とは何か？」、「幻の動物に関するマグルの認知度小史」といったコーナーもあり、こちらも読み応えがあります。そして、ハリポタ・ワールドの奥深さを再確認させてくれます。
残念ながらカラーイラストは載っていません。が、白黒のイラストが幾つかあります。特筆すべきは、随所に見られる「ハリー、ロン、ハーマイオニーの落書き」です。「落書き」からは、この三人組の性格や学校生活を垣間見ることができ、教科書自体を一層憎めないものにしています。ハリポタ・シリーズのファンなら、買って損はないでしょう。また、ハリポタ・ワールドにおける怪物観を知りたい人、幻獣に興味のある人にも、お勧めの一冊です

ところどころにあるいたずら書きがおもしろい。
最初はこれだけ買って読んだので良くわからなかったけど、
シリーズを読んでからこれを見れば、思わずニヤリです。

でも、いたずら書きが日本語で書いてあるのは愛嬌ですね。
