ラヴクラフトを含めた数人の人達の間でオリジナルの作品群が描かれ、後にダーレスが体系として纏め上げたと言われるクトゥルー神話ですが、それに分類されるオリジナル作家達の作品や、後続作家達の傑作、佳作が集大成されています。国書刊行会から出ている『ク・リトル・リトル神話体系』等と合わせて読めば、最初の頃の作家達が幾分なりとも備えていた(或いは、理解しようとしていた)コズミックな感覚を知ることが出来るでしょう。

また、創元推理文庫から出ているラヴクラフト全集の裡、最初の2巻に収録されている7作品は、大瀧啓裕以外の方が訳されたものなのですが、このシリーズには、巻はバラバラですが、その大瀧版が収録されています。こちらも名訳です。

「ラヴクラフトのクトゥルー」が読みたい読者にとって、このシリーズは悪質な水増しであるとしか言いようがない。
もちろんラブクラフト自身の作品も収められているし、またダーレスら追随者のものの中に比較的面白くなくはないものもないわけではない。しかしこのシリーズ全体を通じてみれば半数以上が読む価値のないような、ラブクラフト本人が書いたわけでもない、いわば「二次創作物」からなる水増しである。

編訳者の大滝は、単にシリーズの巻数を増やさんがためだけに、このような不誠実な編纂を行ったのではないかと疑いたくなる（プロが書いたものならまだしも、要はクトゥルーファンのアマチュアが書いたような程度のものまで含まれているのだ）。

さらに言えば訳もひどい。

一巻を買う前に、このシリーズでラブクラフトを揃えるのか、それともまだマシな他出版社のシリーズで買うべきか、考えてみることをお薦めする。

何しろこの本にはラヴクラフト/ダーレスによる『破風の窓』が
収められています。この作品は傑作でラヴクラフトの死後、ダーレス
によりまとめられたものですが、ダーレス氏、実に良い仕事をしています。
何かが見えてきそうなこの雰囲気と恐怖。ラヴクラフトの世界そのもの
です。ラヴクラフト（がらみ）では、『闇をさまようもの』の次に好きな
作品です。
