筆頭著者ニキ・リンコ氏と花風社代表浅見淳子氏による対談と、自閉児トニーくんのママ・仲本博子氏による米国の実情紹介とが、基本的には交互に並べられている。また、日本での取り組みの例として、横浜の小学5年生の実例も少しだけ浅見氏から紹介される。

米国は発達障害児に対する支援が充実しているとよく言われるが、その詳細は実は「親が、時には弁護士などの助けを借りてでも交渉して勝ち取る」ものであることが紹介される。そこには当然、経済格差の問題が厳然と存在する（もちろんこれは米国では障害児教育に限った話ではないが）。

そのため著者らは、米国の方式をそのまま日本で丸写しすることはできないのではないかと指摘する。ただし、関係者全員で情報を共有するシステム（今の日本では担任が変わるたびに一から説明しなければいけないが、そういうことは米国では起こらない）については高く評価している。


対談編は主にニキ氏の実例の紹介。ただし、網羅的な紹介ではなく、トニーくんの実例と対比しての形がメインである。

その上でニキ氏らは、まず自閉傾向について正しい知識を身につけてほしいということ、特に、自閉児の言動はその児童が物事を単純化しすぎているせいであって、「心の闇」という言葉で形容されるような「深い意図を読む」のをやめることを要望している。

非常に読みやすい文体で、電車の中で一気に読み終えてしまった。「当事者から見た米国の制度」について書かれた稀有な文献なので、読んでおいて損はない。

４歳の自閉症の女の子の母親です。
子供が診断を受けたのは２歳前でした。療育センターに通うように言われて、毎週通っていました。そこで会うおかあさんたちと友達になりましたが、それぞれ考え方が違っていて、自分の子供の障害を認めるのがいやで一切自閉症に関する情報を知りたがらない人や、自閉症ではないと信じている人、また積極的にいろいろな療法を試している人など様々でした。その頃から親の考え方や受け止め方で子供は受けるべき療育を受けられない場合もあるだろうと感じていましたが、この本を読み更に、親次第で子供の将来も変わっていくのだろうと感じました。自閉症に関して様々な本を読んでいますが、この本も「読んでみて良かった」と思える本です。

特別支援教育がスタート。
ニキさんに、どんな教育をしてもらったら当事者として嬉しいか？を聞いたそうです。
高機能広汎性発達障がいの息子を持つ親として、とても興味がありました。

余談ですが、この聞き手の方、ニキさんの答えを上手に聞いてあげているなあと思いました。理解がとても深くていらっしゃる。。。。こういう理解者が増えていって欲しいものです。

教育のお手本になるのは、やはりアメリカ。
日本の現状とはかなりの差があります。地域ぐるみの支援がなされている。

でも決してアメリカの真似をするのではなく、日本には日本のよいやりかたがあるのでは？
という点でなるほどなあと思いました。

私は一番この本を、教育委員会の人に読んで欲しいなと思いました。

日本においてもどうかよいシステムができますように。
コドモが、笑顔で学校にいけますように。
