このバナナブックスシリーズの版型はA5サイズだからジーンズのポケットにいれるにはちょっと幅が大きいけれど、ジャケットのサイドポケットに入れて連れて歩くにはちょうどいい。対照的に、ぼくたちが学生の頃から親しんできたADA EDITAのGAシリーズはとくに大きな版型だから、本棚には特別席を必要とした。そのGAたちは、ぼくたちの記憶の中でも特別席を占めてきた。バナナブックスは、はじめから日本語と英語で表記するという、GAの画期的なスタイルを踏襲してつくられている。うまくいけば、バナナブックスも世界中で特別席を占めることができるだろうが、それはGAとはまったく別の、たとえばジャケットやバッグのサイドポケットだろう。
　修道院という建築は、それ自体がとても魅力的だ。なにしろそこは、日常の生活や生産と同時に、宇宙の無限大への広がりと自らのうちへの探求がひとつの場所で一致する、小さな惑星のようなものなのだから。ラトゥーレットは、コルビュジェが集合住宅と教会のためにつくり出したヴォキャブラリーがたくさん込められた魅力的な惑星。
　この小さな本には、GAの大きな写真と同じものを伝えることはできないし、ひとつの「惑星」を伝えきることもできない。しかし、ときどきポケットから取り出してページをパラパラとめくり修道院のあちらこちらを瞬時に移動して巡るうちに、小さいということがアドバンテージになってくる。コンピューターに取り込んだ写真をスライドショーで見る時のようにして、ぼくたちの中に画像が保存され、全体像がぼくたちのなかに作られてくるのだ。携帯電話と大きなディスプレイとの間を始終行き来しているおかげで、小さな画像から想像力をひろげる能力が、いつのまにかできていたらしい。星を４つにしたのは、シリーズがもっとよくなることを期待してのことだ。

コンパクトで、非常に読み易い本です。
写真が掲載されている建築書は、よくも悪くも大型なものが多い中、このとっつき易さは嬉しいですね。
同様のコルビュジェ紹介本に比較して値段も手頃なので、コルビュジェ・ファンには垂涎の一冊と言えそうです。
