実地で関係者の話を聞いたことは評価できる。しかし読後感じたのは、著者の一面的な身びいき、浅い知識だった。台湾の日本語を喋る老人の話を真に受けて書いてしまった見本のような内容。台湾はアイデンティティーが分裂し様々な価値観が重層的に並存する社会。複雑な歴史的背景を公正に理解するには、この本では内容不足。失礼ながら、サブカルチャー系の「台湾それ行け探偵団」あたりでやめておけばボロも出なかっただろう。類似のタイトル「台湾新世代―脱中国化の行方」（この本は本書と異なり良書）と間違って買ってしまった本だけに後悔も深い。
