表紙のみからだと、バットマンの本というイメージがしますが、実質的にはバットマン、スーパーマンと割と一般的にも知られているキャラクターから、スワップシング、ビジランテといった日本では全くといってないほど知られていないキャラクターまで、鬼才アラン・ムーアが手掛けた作品を集めた傑作集です。

過去にムーアが手掛け和訳された作品ではスポーン（の一部）やウォッチメンがあります。
これらに氏の魅力に惹かれた方は必携の一冊と言えるでしょうし、そうでなとくもアメコミに興味ある人であれば一読の価値があると思います。

タイトルのキリングジョークはリアリスティックな画風と構成もさることながら、
カラーリングのインパクトがかなり強烈な作品。一方、スワンプシングはアート
（スティーブン・ビセットとジョン・タトルベン）が独特でなんだか諸星大二郎の
絵を連想させ、好き嫌いがあるかも。その他はスーパーマンやグリーンアローの
小品が４編。
総じて、フランク・ミラーのダークナイトほどエポックメイキングでなく、同著者の
リーグオブエクストラオーディナリと言った長編ほど読み応えがある訳でもないので、
値段からしてもコアなアメコミファンやアラン・ムーアファン向けのコレクターズア
イテムと言えるのでは。

ジョーカーの悲劇がまず冒頭に収められています。
ジョーカーも元はフツウの人だったんですよね。それが何かが狂ってこうなっちゃって。「人生は桁外れに馬鹿げたジョークさ」なんて言っちゃうんです。誰かがね、そばについててあげればね、何とかなったかもしれない。でも人生は理不尽で…みたいな。
ビジランテも「こんなはずじゃなかった」みたいな話ですね。父親は本当は普通の愛情を娘に持ってるんだけど、その行動が常軌を逸していて、関わる人をみんな不幸に陥れてしまう。もう悲劇を描かせたら天才ですね、アラン・ムーアは。
