郵便事業が、日本に誕生してから132年の歳月が流れたが、特に本年（2003年）は、公社化という点において過去最大の転換期にあたる。郵政事業創設者の前島密は、江戸から明治という激しい時代の転換期に生きた、壮烈な意志を持つ事業家であることがこの本を読むことによって分かる。大久保利通、大隈重信、渋沢栄一、榎本武揚、これらの登場人物が、生き生きと描かれ、まさに前島密とその時代のエナジーが全身を駆け巡るように通り抜ける。まさに彼らは、身を呈して近代国家創生に命を賭けたのである。熱い息吹と、凛とした清冽な空気が全編を覆い、読後、寂とした感慨が残る。絶品の歴史書であり、郵便事業に携わる30万人もの心の賛歌である。
