　ポッドキャスティングというと世の中では音楽を携帯型ハードディスクプレイヤー（ＭＰ３）へ移して楽しむことのできる技術というイメージが強いかもしれませんが、本書は、ポッドキャスティングの無料番組を英語のヒヤリング学習のために活用する方法について平易に解説した一冊です。
　
　ポッドキャスティングってそもそも何？という点から解き起こしています。本書の記述にしたがってiTunesをダウンロードするところから始め、掲載されているいくつかの英語学習番組を聴取してみたり、検索機能を使って新たに番組を探してみたりしました。実に分かりやすく、途中で迷うことなく、あっという間にポッドキャスティングの世界にどっぷりつかることが出来るようになりました。
　ＣＮＮの番組は毎回４分程度というコンパクトな長さで最新ニュースを伝えてくれるので、なかなか使いでがあります。

　私はこの4年、スペイン語学習のためにインターネットを利用して新聞記事を読んだり、テレビ放送を見たりしてきましたが、ポッドキャスティングも今後大いに利用したいと思った次第です。今のところはまだまだスペイン語放送でこれはというのは見つかっていませんが、おそらく数年以内に充実した番組がいくつも出来てくることでしょう。

　ただし、本書のタイトルはミスリーディングな気もします。「英会話」とありますが、あくまでヒヤリング力をつけるための一助にポッドキャスティングが使えるというのが実態で、決して「会話」ができるようになるわけではないと思います。その点、誤解なきように。

今年(2005)、日本の流行語大賞に選ばれたのは「小泉劇場」と「想定内（外）」ですが、Oxford University Pressが決めた"Word of the Year 2005"は"podcast"だそうです。来年からNew Oxford American Dictionaryにも載せる予定とのこと。海の向こうではすっかり認知されている言葉なんですね。この本で知りましたが、White Houseのpodcast局を持っている程ですから。(いつか日本でも官邸のpodcastを持つ時代になるのかも？)

この本は個人の趣向にあった英語学習サイトを見つけるための手がかりになりますね。色々と例が挙がっていて参考になりました。個人的にはNASAの「scienceネタのpodcast」が面白かったです。それをきっかけにして色々探すと、Nature誌とScience誌もpodcastを持っていることに気付きました。実際に聞いてみるとBritish英語(Nature)とAmerican英語(Science)の差も出ていて面白かったです。これらの番組が無料で聞けるとは、海の向こうは懐が深いですねぇ、嬉しくなりました。(^-^) こんな風に自分の好みで番組を探して、通勤時間などを利用して番組を聞けるというのがpodcastの良さですね。素晴らしいです。
なおScienceのpodcastはiTunes podcastのリストから見つけられなかったのですが、この本にある方法(ホームページ上のRSS/Podcastのアイコンをdrag＆dropする方法)でiTunes podcastに登録出来ました。(なお非iPodユーザーのための説明も記載されています) この本は役に立ちました、有難う！★５つです。

iPodも知らなかったのに、この本をきっかけに、毎朝電車でＣＮＮを聞くようになりました。さらに、この本を通じてポッドキャスティングの奥深い世界が見えてきました。
「iPodを音楽聞くだけに使うなんてもったいない」って言うことを、英会話を材料に、筆者が軽いタッチで分かりやすく、語りかける気持ちが伝わってきました。
たんなる「How to本」ではなく、ポッドキャスティングに対する「期待」・「思い」が込められたこの本を読んだ読者が、リアルなポッドキャスティングのフロントランナーになるのでしょう。
