excellent book, mediocre narration, 2003/6/6
.The audio editions somehow sounded both MECHANICAL at times, and TRYING TOO HARD to be dramatic in other parts. The listening experience feels BLAND, in comparison to reading the book. Having said that, . . . Few would be able to hear the story while keeping a straight face, even in public, even with earphones on. So ghastly that one is almost tempted to get up and head somewhere to rescue the boy. Unfortunately, reaching out to save the child from his suffering over the years was something not too many even attempted to do in real life--the third tragedy of his life (after the suffering itself, and the fact that it came from his own mother who, incidentally, did it to none of her other children). And the few who did, didn't do so EFFECTIVELY, despite the OTHERWISE-INEXPLICABLE signs screaming at them in the face. This is one of the stories which cemented my family's determination to direct our charity work towards ACTIVE intervention to save abused children. We chose to not "get back to our OWN lives after the tearjerker". Followed by "The Lost Boy" and "A Man Named Dave", also by David Pelzer (who is now an adult, living with a loving son, and finally blessed by bliss). See also, by other authors: "A Rock and A Hard Place" and "They Cage The Animals At Night". And the nearly a dozen by Torey Hayden. 英語の得意な方向きです。本の日本語版『'It’と呼ばれた子』も出ています。 .
