台湾・台北生まれ。台北第一女子高級中学卒業。1959年、留学生として来日。早稲田大学文学部英文学科卒業。同大学院文学研究科博士課程修了。その後、ケンブリッジ大学客員研究員、早稲田大学講師などを経てJET日本語学校校長を務める。現在、同校理事長。評論家。台湾独立運動に参加したため、国民党政府のブラックリストにのせられ、結果、二子の出生も台湾の戸籍に記載がない。無効になったままのパスポートを破り捨て、政治犯として手配されている国に、いつ送り返されるかわからないという厳しい生活を30年以上送ってきた。その覚悟ある人となりが放つ辛口の発言にはファンが多い(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

2000年11月に出版された「日本人に生まれて幸せですか」を改題・改訂した新版です。

八年前の著書ではあっても、これから先何年後に読んでも色あせないだろう言葉で溢れています。

台湾というかつて日本の植民地であった国の出身にも関わらず、厳しくも暖かい言葉で日本人を叱咤・激励する姿勢には読んでいて涙が出ました。

本書の帯には

「自分の国を悪く言うのは、世界中で日本人だけ」

「日本という国がイヤだと言う日本人は、日本人をやめればいい」

「国のために何をするかを考えず、権利だけは主張する」

「自分の国を愛さない人間を、外国人は誰も信用しない」

など本書からの抜粋された一言が書いてあり、これだけでも「確かに」と唸ってしまうところです。

「外から見た日本」を知れば、日本に対する考え方や自分の日本人としての在り方も変わってくると思います。

見た目孫悟空でも頭脳は釈迦の如し
美しき金さんの日本人への愛のこもったメッセージ
もっと自国に誇りを持ち自身を持て
そのためにはもっと知らなければならないことが多い
昔の日本人が持ちえ今の日本人が持っていないもの
世界で通用しない控えめ気質
忘れられたお互い様
因果応報のココロ
みなさんご一読を
それでもわからない人には日本人をおやめなさい
そういう選択肢もあります
というショック療法的指南も入ってます（汗）
