映画の原作なのかと思いきや、実は映画を元にして書かれた小説。
映画は映像美を追求する割に、内容が描ききれてなくて安っぽかった。
で、こっちは映画より断然いい。かっこいい作品だと思いました。
悲しい話だとは全く感じなかった。寧ろ、果敢さ、強さを感じたくらいで。
全体を通して、エゴイズムや、正当化、性的な妄想だったり、そういう目を伏せがちな人の心情のえげつなさを美化することなく真っ向から描かれてる。
また、普段「美徳」とすることで隠された不誠実さや弱さも、裏返したように露にされる。例えば、ネズミが母親を想う場面とか。不埒で、弱くて、縋り付くようなずるさがあって、表に向ける傲慢さがあって、でも人を想う気持ちは本物で。本当のことは、読み手と本人にしか分かんなくて。
ナルシズムが排除され冷徹であるからこそ、恥ずかしい程身の内に響くものがあり、感慨深く、そこから改めて人間臭いものに対する愛情が湧く。
真の生きる強さってそういうものじゃないかと思う。キレイゴトで覆い隠すような気休めでなく。
