神智学の入門書としては最適な本です。

神智学とはいえないような書籍があふれる現状ですが、この本は神智学の書籍として薦めることができるものです。
おかしな概念はすてて、この本から取り組みのがいいでしょう。

翻訳は、意味をある程度伝えることに成功しているといえるでしょう。原文の意味を大きく変えたところもあまりないと思います。原本とあわせて、精読すべき第一級の本です。

　本書の著者ブラヴァツキー夫人によって1875年に設立された神智学協会とその教義は、ベンジャミン・クレームのシェア・インターナショナルやルドルフ・シュタイナーの人智学協会をはじめとする多数の疑似宗教的組織の思想的淵源となってきましたが、すでにブラヴァツキーの生前から数多くの批判を受けてきています。

　その中の一つに、神智学協会が「大師」からの「霊感」によって書かれたと主張するブラヴァツキーの著作Isis Unveiledにおける剽窃問題があります。

　すでに1891年の時点でコールマンは、Isis Unveiledはブラヴァツキーが当時の二次的オカルト文献からの剽窃によって書いたにすぎず、剽窃の具体例はおよそ二千箇所（！）にのぼると主張しました。

　Bruce F.Campbellは、コールマンが指摘した中の数十の例を検討し、そのすべてにおいて、コールマンが挙げた典拠から「イシス」の一節が文字通り剽窃されているのを確認したうえで、ブラヴァツキーが「霊感」によって本書を書いたという主張に重大な疑問をなげかけています。(Ancient Wisdom Revived,University of California Press,1980)

　また、二十世紀における学問的なカバラー研究の大家であったゲルショム・ショーレムは、「ユダヤ神秘主義」（邦訳:法政大学出版局）の中で、ブラヴァツキーが「秘密教義」を書くにあたって「ゾーハル」などを大量に盗用しているにすぎないことを指摘し、神智学協会を｢疑似宗教」と呼んでいます。
