　抽象的な数学体系は、普遍的である。数学の計算の結果が国によって違うとか、ある地域では三平方の定理が成り立たないなどということはない。
　しかし、暦や曜日、妊娠期間の数え方といった生活に密着したレベルになると、とたんに国や地域によって変わってくる。驚くべき多様性を見せる。
　本書はこれらの事例をあますところなく大量におさめ、読者の知的興奮を誘ってやまない。数というものの不思議さを再確認させてくれる。

物事を一から考えることの重要性を痛感させられることが多い。

中学時代はまだしも、私の高校時代を振り返ると
数学の授業は苦痛以外の何者でもなかった。
いつもどうやって時間を潰そうかと考えていた。
興味の対象に無いものを丸暗記することほど苦痛なものは無い。

しかし、物事には成り立ちというものがある、歴史というものがある。
人が何を考えどういう風にして今、「当たり前」と思われているような形へと結実させたのか、あるいはされなかったのかを考えさせる一冊。
こんな本を中学生の頃に読みたかった
