今回の芋焼酎ブームについて産地である鹿児島、宮崎の人々は、ずいぶん前からかなり冷めた目で東京や大阪の状況を眺めていたことをご存知だろうか。

芋焼酎は通常お湯で割ったり、ロックにして供されるため、飲み屋にとって実質的な「利益率」が高く、悪徳的な店にとってはいいように使われてきた利益商材である。ブーム過熱によって現れた幻の焼酎やプレミア焼酎○○○などと偽って中身は違う銘柄を入れて出していた店も首都圏には存在する。しかもワンショット、ン千円である。それをいい気になって飲んでいたバブリーな人間も馬鹿であるが、そうした状況を煽ったのも、テレビや雑誌などのマスコミである。操作されたランキング情報や思惑のいっぱいつまった稀少情報などを無批判に流してしまった罪は大きいが、受け取り手もリテラシーがなかった。しかし、少なからず酒（日本酒やワイン、泡盛も含め）のブーム期には、スノッブな人たちが群がるものである。

本書は、そうした状況を冷静に鑑みつつ、南九州の風土が生み出した芋焼酎の未来にまで視野が及んでいる。20年前の名著「焼酎文化図譜」を振り返る温故知新的な姿勢や、丹念な蔵元取材などに好感がもてる。銘柄紹介は、時折方言なども織り交ぜながらのエッセイ風で、さながら村上春樹の「ポートレイト・イン・ジャズ」の芋焼酎版かのような慈愛に満ちている。もちろん実用的な価値も高い。類書と比較されたし。

ブームを受けて様々な「本格焼酎本」「芋焼酎本」が出版されたが、その真打ち的な存在がこの本だと思う。

通常、各銘柄の紹介は孫引き的な簡単なコメントにとどまっているが、この本では蔵の代表銘柄（レギュラー酒）を軸に据え、その蔵の歴史や特徴、造り手の姿勢、蔵癖、飲み方による味わいの違いにまで言及しており、内容が濃い。圧巻のおもしろさである。

いやぁ、なかなか刺激に満ちた一冊でした。
中国産冷凍芋の保存現場をおさえた写真、標準小売価格を大幅に上まわるプレミア価格をつけられて店頭に並んでいる焼酎銘柄の数々、「焼酎アドバイザー」という資格の実体のなさにも関わらず、それを有り難がってしまう人の心理などなど、芋焼酎の裏事情ともいうべき領域によくぞ踏み込んでくれたという感じです。

昨今のブームにつけこんで、人気銘柄の転売を重ねてぼろい商売をし、甘い蜜をすすっているブローカーの方々、またプレミア焼酎をオークションで掻き集めてそれを餌に商売をしている飲食業者の方々などは多少なりとも肝を冷やしたのではないでしょうか。

もっとも、読売新聞でかつてすっぱ抜かれた業界の風雲児、西酒造の初留取り「ちびちび」のフェルラ酸添加疑惑や「魔王」はこれって糖類添加してるんじゃないのやっぱり、などといった事情についてはほとんど触れられていません（銘柄紹介には選ばれておらず、その辺でこの本の姿勢を見せているのだと思いますが…）。よって☆４つ。

ただ、「初心者ほどプレミア焼酎を飲みたがる、有り難がる」という傾向を知らしめ、一石を投じることになった意味でかなり評価できるでしょう。
