著者は宇宙物理学者。本を選び出したポリシーは、
誰もが同じように誉め上げるベストセラーは敬遠したとのこと。
そして、日頃から知りたいと思っていた謎に挑戦した力作、
思いもかけぬ展開が予期されるような話題、そして歴史や文学や民俗など
幅広い文化の領域に広がっていくような本を選んだとのことだ。

最初に、科学の｢正｣と｢負｣の側面を見据えながら読む、というテーマがある。
取り上げているのは、例えば『利己的な遺伝子』 (リチャード・ドーキンス）である。
