ちょうど京都に行こうとしていたときにこの本に出会いました。
お寺ごとに見やすくまとまっていて、仏像そのものの話はもちろん
のこと、仏像や寺にまつわる話が豊富に載っていて、読み物としても
楽しめます。
お寺の近くにある休めるお店なども載っていて実用的なガイドブック
になっていて役立ちました。
京都・奈良以外のお寺の話も読みたいなあ。

京都、奈良には本当に美しい姿の仏像が沢山奉られています。
本書には、そのような仏像とそれが安置されている寺院を写真とイラストで丁寧に紹介したガイドブックです。他に類書を見ませんので、その意味においても貴重です。
巻末の資料編に掲載されている仏像の種類は分かりやすい記述ですし、明王、天部の種類についても同様です。

本書で紹介されている仏像を少し取り上げてみたいと思います。
太秦広隆寺の宝冠弥勒菩薩の美しさは格別で、何回拝見してもその得られる感動は変りません。現在は新霊宝殿に奉られていますが、私が学生時代には、古いお堂に置かれてあり、直ぐ傍まで近づいて拝見させていただいた時は、あまりの素晴らしさに時の立つのも忘れるぐらいでした。

紅葉で有名な永観堂のみかえり阿弥陀、六波羅蜜寺にある６体の小さな弥陀を口からだしている空也上人立像、極楽浄土を現世に現した宇治の平等院の阿弥陀如来坐像、それぞれの美しさは本当に実物の仏様を拝まないと分からないと思っています。

奈良興福寺のたおやかな阿修羅立像、東大寺の南大門でにらみを利かせている金剛力士像、法隆寺のすらっとした百済観音、そして中宮寺の穏やかな表情の菩薩半跏像、それぞれいつお会いしてもその受ける感動は変りません。

心の癒しとして、仏様にお参りする際の貴重な指南書として利用されるのもいいですし、京都・奈良の観光ガイドの仏像というテーマ別の本としての活用も考えられます。

単に仏像の紹介にとどまらずに、歴史や文化的な背景に触れているので楽しく読めました。読んでいるうちに、京都や奈良に仏像に会いに行きたい~って思いました。
お店の情報や地図も入っているので、今度、京都に行くときには絶対に持っていくつもりです。
