　かつて｢言語生活｣(筑摩書房)や｢国立劇場園芸場｣(国立劇場）に連載された聞書の文字化などをまとめて、一冊の本の形にしたものです。
　生きた東京弁の紹介であると共に、消えゆく明治･大正のことばを具体的に理解せしめることを目的として企画されています。

　言語学、あるいは方言学的な立場に依拠した本というよりも、むしろ、いわゆる｢江戸っ子｣と東京の伝統風俗などを話題にした対談を通して、東京弁の特徴を浮き彫りにし、東京弁とはどんなことばとして位置づけられるのかを記録したものです。明治時代を中心とした東京弁の生き生きとした姿がそこに感じられます。

　東京のことば＝共通語と思っていらっしゃる方に是非読んでみて頂きたい一冊です。
