   本書は、著者が開発したスキーマコンパイラ、Relaxerについて解説した本である。Relaxerとは、XMLの新しいスキーマ言語であるRELAXで記述された、XMLドキュメントを操作するためのもので、Javaプログラムをはじめとした各種のプログラムや定義ファイルを自動的に生成するスキーマコンパイラである。Relaxerには、XMLとJavaの間をマッピングする機能に加えて、CompositeパターンやVisitorパターンといったデザインパターンによるデザインテンプレートをRelaxerの生成するJavaクラスに埋め込む機能、関係データベースへの格納、JSPからの起動などがあり、これらの機能を使うことによって、XMLシステムの開発効率が飛躍的に向上する。

   本書は、はじめにRelaxerの初歩的な使い方やオプション設定方法などの基本部分を解説し、次にServlet、JSP、Tagライブラリ、JDBCといったJ2EEベースのWebアプリケーション開発など、Relaxerを使った開発について説明している。3ティアモデル、またはJ2EEパターンの5ティアモデルの上をJavaオブジェクトにマッピングされたXMLデータがシームレスに流れていく過程を体験することで、Relaxerの可能性を認識することができる。

本書はRelaxerについての初の解説書である。Relaxerを用いてJavaプログラミングを容易にする方法が具体的に示されている。プログラマは、RELAXスキーマを作成したのち、RelaxerによってJavaクラスを生成する。生成されたJavaクラスは、XML文書とJavaオブジェクトの間の相互変換を実現する。生成されたクラスは豊富なメソッドを備えているので、Javaオブジェクトの取り扱いはきわめて容易である。CompositeパターンやVisitorパターンの実装、関係データベースへの格納、JSPからの起動まで、プログラマの代わりにRelaxerが行ってくれる。
