平山夢明氏は怪談本の方が有名なのかも知れない。
だからこそ、この『メルキオールの惨劇』を読まねばならないと思う。
怪談だけが平山夢明ではないのだ。

氏の書く物語は何故だか気持ち良い。

著者紹介などには『生理的に~』云々あって、手を出したがらない方が多いだろう。だが、私にとって、そんなことはない。

先に読み進んで、物語が終わる事が寂しいとさえ思ったのである。

全体的な感覚は無国籍／無軌道／無遠慮だろうか？
読んでいて、にやりとしてしまう。ごそごそっとした感触はささくれた
心にがちり、とハマるだろう。

星４つの理由は、もう少し続きがあればなぁ…であったのだが、実は続編の予定有りとの情報も入って来た。

凡百のベストセラーなんぞ読んでいる暇があったら、こいつを読め！
そして、自分の歪みと狂気を感じとろう。

はじめ読み始めたとき、少しイメージと違うなぁとがっかりしたのですが、読んでいくうちに一気に引き込まれていきました。
おもしろいんです。
伏線とか弱いんですけど、関係ないような伏線とかあるんですけど、とにかくおもしろい。設定がいい。
こんな小説は今まで読んだことはありませんでした。
グイグイきますよ。

物語は破綻しているが、魅力ある展開だった。
人の不幸をコレクションする男の依頼を受けた「俺」は、自分の子供の首を切断した女の調査に赴く。
おお、なんという凄まじい設定！身の毛もよだつとはこのことではないか。これは心してかからねばなるまいてと思ったあなた、いやいやちょっとお待ちください。これね、読めばわかるけどホラーの体裁で出版されているにも関わらず、どちらかといえばユーモアさえ感じられる作品なのである。
ぼくは、この本読んでこの人いっぺんに好きになってしまった。
無粋を承知で言わせてもらうなら、センスがいいのである。ホラーとしてではなく、物語世界を構築するにあたってそのセンスの良さが光っている。
上記のあらすじを読むと、まったく不気味な「黒い家」系のホラーのように思ってしまうのだが、いざひもといてみると、なんとも奇妙なユーモアのあるファンタジーのようだった。それも読み手の脳髄をビンビン刺激するかなりヤバい作風だ。暴言を承知で言わせてもらうなら、もう筋などどうでもよいとまで思えてくるくらいヤバいのだ。う〜ん、この人の小説をもっと読みたい。というか、はやくもっともっと分厚い本を出して欲しいものだ。
それにしても、ピーナッツ・バターってああいう風に作るのかあ。なるほど、勉強になるなあ。
