小説の方がストーリー構成やテーマが深いが、
映画版の超能力描写に斬新な演出があって、
映画版も私は高く評価する。
エスパースパイの活劇であるが、
超能力を映像化する場合、ほとんどの作品は、
超能力の迫力や凄いという「超えた」素晴らしい能力というアプローチの仕方をするが、
映画版では笑いの演出があってナイスであった。
主人公が初めてテレポートするシーン、映画版では大爆笑出来ます。
超能力なんてものは、物理法則のある我々の世界では存在できない。
超能力描写をお笑いのネタにして馬鹿にしているとも取れる映画は、
科学的な視点を忘れていない優れたＳＦ映画である。
イエス・キリストを誑かした悪魔も登場する原作小説の方が
思想的には深いけどね。

小松左京氏といえば、難解(?)な本格SFを得意とする作家だが、本書は小松氏にしては珍しい、ストレートな娯楽SF。でも、さすが小松氏の作品、圧倒的な筆力で、最高級の娯楽SFに仕上がっています。特に、ちょっとジュブナイルな設定と、かなりアダルトな描写の落差が、非常に楽しいです。SFマニアの間では今一つ評価が低い作品ですが、個人的には小松氏の長編SFの中で、一番好きな作品です。未読の方は、是非、読みましょう。

1964年に発表されたこの作品を、2003年も終わろうとしている今頃になって、初めて読んだのであるが…。

「エスパイ」とはエスパー＋スパイからの造語で、東西冷戦下、ソ連首相暗殺計画をめぐる、そのエスパイと謎の超能力集団の戦いが描かれている。国際政治の舞台裏の権謀術数の描写は良いが、ベルリンの壁が崩壊してから10年以上経った今、その緊迫感はあまり伝わってこない。また、超能力者が主人公であると、結局最後は超能力で何でも解決してしまうのではないかとの思いがよぎってしまうことも、緊迫感の低下を招く。そんな訳で☆は2つである。
