日本の近世絵画から近代絵画に登場した鳥、獣、虫、魚を描いた作品を紹介し、その部分をクローズアップして分かりやすく提示した図案集です。眺めているだけでユーモアのある表情に目を奪われますし、写実的な絵から漫画的な絵まで、実に様々な画風の動物たちが紹介されています。ユニークな編纂物ですし、面白い企画だと思いました。

まず宮内庁三の丸尚蔵館所蔵の円山応挙の有名な「群獣図屏風」の動物たちに目を奪われました。格調高い動物が描かれています。流石に円山応挙だと感心する出来栄えでした。
他には、雲谷等鶴の「花鳥図」、今尾景年の「花鳥之図」、伊藤若冲の「旭日鳳凰図」「鳳凰・鷺図」「芦鵞図」「大鶏雌雄図」「向日葵雌雄図」「老松鸚鵡図」、曽我蕭白の「波濤群鶴図」「群仙図屏風」、狩野探幽の「鳳凰・鷺図」、小林古径の「双鳩」、菱田春草の「薊に鳩図」、速水御舟の「寒鳩寒雀」「鳥」、河鍋暁斎の「龍虎図屏風」、雪村の「竹に虎図」、狩野永徳の「唐獅子図屏風」、竹内栖鳳の「飼われたる猿と兎」「熊」、橋本関雪の「玄猿」など、紹介しきれないほどの作品から選ばれています。
当然それぞれの絵師や画家の個性が表れていますし、時代性も感じ取ることができます。案外現代に近い感覚で描いている作品を発見したりするのもまた一興です。

モティーフとなったものは、獅子、駱駝、虎、豹、鹿、狗、猪、熊、猫、栗鼠、馬、牛、象、猿、兎、山羊、貍、鼠、魚・貝、鳥、虫などでした。想像上の産物に至ってはその生みだす苦労がしのばれました。
京都市立美術大学名誉教授の榊原 吉郎氏による解説が加わっています。

ピエ・ブックスの”日本の図像”Seriesもこれで4冊目であるが、今回は動物画である。動物といっても鳥や犬といった実在の動物だけでなく、龍の絵も7点くらい取り上げられていてなかなか興味深い。曾我蕭白の群仙図あたりも動物が描かれているということでここに取り上げられている。構成等はこれまでの3冊と同じなので、その面白さのよくわかっている読者はいますぐ購入して、決して期待を裏切らないと思う。
