　勝新の全盛時代を知らない世代にとっては、“大麻パンツ事件”をはじめとした晩年の“イケてるトーク”の印象が強烈である。「なぜこの人はこんなにエラそうなんだろう。ふてぶてしいんだろう」ってのがあって、それはまったく不快なものではなく、マーケティングを身に着けた後進のちいせぇ芸能人達を見慣れた者からすると、逆にとても新鮮に感じられたものだ。それは金やんや談志にしてもそうである。つまりスタアが成立した時代のスタアのオーラって奴だ。そして、彼らのイケてるトークを聴くと、全盛時をリアルタイムに体験できなかった悔しさ、やるせなさが募る。まぁDVDとか片っ端から見るくらいが関の山なんだろうけど、そんなオタッキーに律儀に作品鑑賞するって態度もなんか違う気がするんだよなぁ。とは言えさまざまなメディアで追体験出来るってのは、もちろんありがたいことではある。
　このビジュアルブックは“絵になる写真を中心に構成した”ってことだけど、まさにそうで、晩年の“イケてるトーク”から入った勝新新参者にとっては、その肉体のフォルムこそが勝新なのだ！という意外な発見に興奮することになる。頁を捲っても捲っても、どの勝新も決まりすぎな位に決まってる！！なんなんだ、この人！肉体の存在感、躍動感もすごいけど、いわゆる“飲む打つ買う”、つまり人間の業（ごう）、性（さが）、煩悩、凄み、弱さといった人間らしさをズバッと表現する仕草、表情！もう、放言とか大麻とか莫大な借金とか、まぁ許してやってよ！って心情にもなる。盟友デニス・ホッパーの序文に始まり、横山剣の談話など大物、意外性ありの人選も冴えてるし、吉田豪の勝新本ガイド、根本敬＋湯浅学の勝新音楽談義もサイコー（エディターの川勝正幸氏に拍手！）。
　勝新のフィギュアを作った高杉涼の「勝新太郎は一つの“種族”だと思うんですよ、日本から絶滅してしまった」、この言葉で決まりである。
