西欧史中心主義の歴史観の中で、アジアは久しく専制と遅れた地域とのイメージが固定化されてきた。日本人である我々自身が西欧の地理上の発見が何をアジアにもたらしたのかさえ知らずにいたのではないだろうか。世界史を数千年の単位で思考し直すことにより、西欧中心主義史観の誤りを科学的に指摘し、アジアの可能性を論証する。アジアで２１世紀を語るのに必読の書と言える。

西洋中心ではなく世界的な地理・歴史の観点から多用な世界システムにおける東洋と西洋の関係が述べられていました。

日本の銀や銅が15C-18Cには世界経済に影響するほどの輸出資源であったこと、イギリスの産業革命がインド・中国などのアジア経済に起因すること、などなど、小生が従来有していた認識とはまったく異なる指摘に大変驚きました。

こうした地理・歴史・経済を統合した総合的な分析を読むのは初めてでしたので刺激的でした。また本書はヨーロッパの書籍という意味でも小生の中では珍しいのですが、まえがきにある著者のアメリカに対する言及も大変愉快でした。
