幼い頃一番好きだった本です。復刊を願っていましたので復刊したときは舞い上がらんばかりでした。（同じような方多数いたと思います。）旧訳でのユニコーンの訳語の「つのうま」が美しい響きであまりに印象深く、　「イッカクジュウ」にはなじめませんでした。
旧訳の良さを再確認しました。お話自体は面白いので小さいお子さんにはおすすめかとおもわれますが。

　主人公の名前が1度聴いたら忘れられない！　「ムッドレ」なんともユニークな響き。おまけに、ファンらジー心をくすぐる印象的な扉絵。ユニコーンと少女の美しい化粧箱入りの本を買ってもらったのは30年以上前だ。挿絵も多く、想像力を刺激してくれる。今見ても異国情緒あふれる独特な雰囲気で、眺めるだけでも十分本の世界に入っていける。読み聞かせにも楽しい本なので、お勧め！（保育園の娘も喜んで聴いています）

　旧訳と新訳の好みの違いは人それぞれ。語感の響きが柔らかいほうが私の好みなので、星４つにした。旧訳は優れていると思うが、新訳との比較を楽しむ事ができるのは、往年のファンの特権だろう。また、娘と程よい距離をとっている両親の姿がさりげなく描かれているのに気付き、「年齢による読みの変化」が実感される。

　日本人に馴染みの薄い北欧の自然とその描写、秘密の友達である人形との会話、それこそ、「千と千尋」に出てくるような、家事にいそしむ魔女、イニシエーションを思わせる川下りと、ユニコーンとの邂逅。こういった様々なモチーフを、じっくり味わって欲しいと思う。子ども時代の心は、一見荒涼として見える物語世界の隠れた豊かさを敏感に受け止める事ができる。
　そして、ムッドレのくびかざりはいったい何の象徴だったのか…？　今でもこの冒険の意味を問い直す私がいる。苔桃のジャムやシャボン玉、丸く磨り減った銀貨などが懐かしくてたまらなくなる。
