2.0 out of 5 stars ロマンチックな体験談, 2004/11/21
ドキュメンタリー風だが具体性に欠け、著者の音楽家と言う体質も加わって、詩が数多く挿入されており、著者のアザラシへの愛情とその交流を描いたロマンチックな読み物という仕上がり。描写がおおまかでしかも冗長なため、あまり頑張って読む気になれない。同等に島の描写もほとんどなく、地元の文化や人々についての記述もほとんどない。スコットランドの話やアザラシの話が存分に味わえるようなものではないと思う。加えて、翻訳を行った熊谷氏は日本の書物も参考にせず、著者やスコットランド系の人々に何のコンタクトも持たなかったのか、地名や人名、ゲール語含むあらゆる固有名詞に大きな間違いを行っている。最後に動物生態学の専門科の新妻氏の解説があり、アザラシの漁業被害に関する漁民、市民、専門科のミーティングによる解決のシステムに対する話が載っているが、本文を読むと、それがちゃんと機能しているような感じはしない。ちょっとミスマッチな感じ。

先のレビューの方が書いておられるように、全体的にピントは甘めです。ですが、アザラシのことが好きな方は、一読してもよいのではと思います（特に、マーケットプレイスの商品が充実しているようなので･･･）。感想としては、こんな人（アザラシ？）もいるんだ、という印象を受けました。筆者がアザラシや野生動物、そしてアイラ島の環境を愛していることは、よく伝わってきます。数時間で読めてしまう程度の本ですし、あまり深く考えずに、軽い気持ちでさらっと読みましょう。
