この本を書店で見かけた時，その美しい装丁に惹かれながらも，「子供向けクリスマス短編集」なんて，ちゃちなファンタジーだったり，センチなだけの話だったりなのでは，となかなか手が伸びませんでした。

しかし，実際に読んでみてびっくり。大人向けのアンソロジーとしても充分通用します。こんなに恐くていいのか，というミもフタもない話はあっても幼稚な話はありません。恐いと言ってもスプラッタな恐さでなく，じわじわした小説の恐さです。心理描写に優れた話，ヒューマンな話，クリスマスの起源となる異教趣味の話，いろいろですが，イギリスの重くて暗い冬にクリスマスの飾りが鈍い光をはなっているような，ムードのある作品が多いです。クリスマスに帰郷を決意した家出少年が長距離トラックをヒッチハイクする「切ってやろうか？」が倫理的なハードボイルドで一番好きです。クリスマスに読んでもそれ以外の時期に読んでもいいし，プレゼントにもいいかも。
