私が所有しているのは小学館文庫版であることをあらかじめ断っておきます．
この漫画、タイトルに漫画家と含まれているとおり、ほぼ全て漫画家が主人公の一話完結の物語です．しかし、漫画家という特殊な職業の話でありながら不思議なほど主人公に共感できてしまいます．主人公たちの多くは「質の良い漫画を作りたい」「自分の表現したい作品を作りたい」と願っていますが、現実では「良い作品≠売れる作品」であり、精神的な葛藤があります．自分のやりたいことをやり続けることの難しさが痛いほどわかります．夢や希望を持って職業に就いたはいいが、満足できる仕事ができず思い悩んだ経験のある方は多いのではないでしょうか．そこに上手く折り合いをつけて生活していくことが「大人」ということでしょうが、そう器用に生きられないことを「青春」と言うのではないでしょうか．

若い人に永く読み継がれて欲しい作品です．絵もオシャレです．

このシリーズもう絶対手に入らないと思って、近くの古本屋で３冊セット（朝日ソノラマのもの）８０００円で買ってしまった。失敗した。

復刻で出てるのを知らなかった。別に読めればよかったのにわざわざ高い金を払ってしまった。買った当初は内容に大満足で高い金額を払ってよかったと思ったが、安い金額でこの内容ならもっと喜んだろう。ただそれだけの高値のつく作家の漫画であるということ、もちろんその面白さも比例しなければならない。でも今の若い人が読んで喜ぶものじゃない。コアな漫画ファンならわからないけど。ガロって聞いてわかる人ならお薦めです。

　1960年代の漫画の黎明期に書かれた「漫画家残酷物語」は、太宰を髣髴とさせるような、若い漫画家達のやるせない青春を描いている。

　コマ割は単純で絵もあまり上手くないが、極上の短編小説を読むようなストーリーにひきこまれる。

　40年前の作品だが、青年達の不安な自我や葛藤、衝突による別れ、成長による諦観、現状への満足等の感情が織り成す人間模様は、青春の本質として、現代と比べてもほとんど変わっていないように思う。

　酒場ではなく喫茶店に行き、ビールではなくウイスキーを飲む。そんな風俗の違いはあっても、彼ら青年達のまるで演じるような自己陶酔や韜晦は、誰もが一度は通る道なのである。

　そんなやるせない青春の結晶がこの作品にある。読むほどに、痛くて、悲しくて、甘えに腹が立ったりして。マンガという表現が発展途上の青春の時代であったことと、永島の才能と嗜好が幸福な出会いをしたのだ。

　生原稿が多数発見され、トレース版だけだった既刊本を編纂した復刻版。編集者の執念に頭が下がる。
