出版されて３０年近く経過、システム論というテーマについての基本
文献としてはいわずと知れた古典だが、いまだに著者によってメンテ
され第３版になってる。第３版では複雑系への論議が追加されている。
それだけ思い入れ深い著作なのだろう。
原題は「人工物の科学」。
「人工物」とは何か？について語る冒頭をよめばこれがいわゆるエン
ジニアリングの教科書などでないことがわかると思う。
むしろここでいう「人工物」は「文化」にちかい。いや、通常は自然
の一部として考えられるような認知にかかる領域についても踏み込ん
でいる。内／外の環境、その接合（Ｉ／Ｆ）。そこにおける「設計」
つまり「デザイン」というものをどうとらえるか・・・
ある意味とても難解ですらある本書はしかし、システムについて考え
る際はいまだに必ず読むべきものだと思える。

　極めて論理的かつ主観的に自然科学と経済学と心理学についてまとめられた一冊です。ノーベル経済学賞を受賞した著者ならではの見聞の広さと考察力の鋭さが伺い知れます。第３版にて「複雑性」に関する新章が増補されており、組織的意思決定においてコンピュータ・シミュレーションによる分析に期待されております。
