ビアンコ,マージェリィ・W.
1881年、ロンドン生まれ。結婚後、アメリカに住む。初期は小説を書いていたが、『The Velveteen Rabbit』を機に、絵本の作家に転身。30数点の作品を残している。1944年、ニューヨークで息をひきとる

酒井 駒子
1966年、兵庫県生まれ。東京芸術大学美術学部卒業。98年の絵本デビュー以来、次々と作品を発表。その華麗な画は国内はもとより海外でも評価が高い。『きつねのかみさま(文・あまんきみこ)』(ポプラ社)で2004年日本絵本賞、『金曜日の砂糖ちゃん』(偕成社)で2005年ブラティスラヴァ世界絵本原画展(BIB)金牌を受賞、『ぼくおかあさんのこと…』(文溪堂)で2006年フランスにてPITCHOU賞を、オランダにてZilveren Griffel賞(銀の石筆賞)を受賞。装画も多く手がけている(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

「ビロードうさぎ」「ベルベットうさぎのなみだ」などタイトル違いで
すでに出てはいるようですが、酒井駒子さんの洋書を見るような
ノスタルジックな挿し絵が素敵（画像イメージが表示されないのが残念！）

そんな挿し絵がピタリマッチしたちょっと切ないストーリーは
大人の心にも響くものがあり、読み聞かせの途中胸がじわっと熱くなりました。

　本物というのは見た目のことじゃないんだ。
　こころからいっぱい愛されたものは、ボロボロになっても本物になる。

ほんもの......という言葉がなんか、深いです。
愛情というのはいろんな奇蹟を起こすもの。

いつまでも心に残るお話です。
だから今でも沢山の子供達に読まれているのですね。
初版１９２２年というからおどろきです！

この作品は有名な原作があり、既に何点も翻訳書が出たり絵本化されていたりするようですね。
それらを知らなかったボクは、酒井さんの絵本を通し、初めて「The Velveteen Rabbit」に
出会うという幸運に恵まれました。　「うさぎ」は酒井さんの代名詞といっていいほど
絵本によく登場しますし、繊細な心を描くことにかけても卓越した感性をもっているだけに、
原作はまるで彼女のために用意されていたといっても過言ではないでしょう。
（他の方の作品を読まずにこう言い切るのも何ですが）

主人公は男の子に愛されようとするうさぎの人形。緑の眼が印象的だ。
自分は本物のうさぎだと信じつつ、人形=物　としての役割をまっとうする
ビロードのうさぎが限りなく切ない。

が、そんなうさぎだからこそ、どんな本物のうさぎよりも　生きることの意味を
深く受け止めているように思えました。

そして、奇跡というものは起るべくして起るものなんだ　と信じたくなりました。

もう何十年も読み継がれているお話です。
五年前にも石井桃子さんが新訳で出版なされました。
今回は酒井駒子さんが翻訳もしています（抄訳ですが）。

おそらく、駒子さんが描きたい場面が描きたいように描かれているのでしょう。
どの場面のぼうやもうさぎもお互いに愛情にあふれています。
保育の経験があることが、
精神的に少し距離を置いた視点から子どもを描かせるのでしょうか。
盲目的でないその観察力で、より子どもらしさを際立たせます。

少し古めかしい日本語で物語を楽しみたいかたは、
石井桃子さん訳の『ビロードうさぎ』（童話館出版）を。
お話は知っているから絵を楽しみたいというかたは、
是非こちらをご覧ください。
