新聞やテレビで取り上げられた「瞬間接着剤で目をつぶされた子犬の話」のルポ。
犬を捨てた元飼い主と、その子犬に瞬間接着剤をつけた人に激しい怒りを覚えた。

目をふさがれた犬・純平は多くの優しい人の援助で目が見えるようになり、
引き取られた先の東京の福祉施設「救世軍新光館」で館長、寄宿舎の人たち、
そして地域の住民の人たちからの愛情で心に受けた傷も癒される。

それだけでなく、純平の面倒を見た寄宿舎の人たちをやさしい人間に変え、
地域から孤立していた新光館が地域から受け入れられるようになった。

だからこそ、著者は「はじめに」で、
＜人が心に傷を負った犬に愛情を注ぎ、その犬が心に傷を負った人に希望を与えている＞
と書いているのだろう。

動物虐待、野宿者襲撃、学校・職場でのいじめ、これらの事件はすべて同じ心から
起こっているのではないだろうか。
学力向上よりも、子供たちに「命の大切さ」を教えることが一番重要なのではないだろうか。
文科省、教育委員会、学校は「いじめ問題」に対して何ら具体策を取っていない。
いじめが発生する環境が、動物虐待、野宿者襲撃、学校でのいじめを生み出していると思えてならない。
