実際にあった事件を元に書かれている小学生向けの本だが、大人にもお勧めできる。

夫を亡くし、過労で働けなくなり、アパートを追い出されホームレスになったおばあさんのハナさん。
困っていたハナさんを助けた荒川河川敷に住むホームレスの川端さん。
ユウヒを河川敷に捨てて行った無責任な飼い主。
ハナさんに飼われ大事にしてくれた恩返しにハナさんの命を救った捨て犬のユウヒ。
ハナさんらが飼っていた犬を保護したボランティアの加藤さん、小松さん。

単に動物愛護の問題だけでなく、ホームレスの問題にも関係した事件だけに、
捨て犬を減らすことや、生活困窮者を支援することなど、いろいろなことを
考えさせてくれる本だった。

ラストは、救助されたハナさんは病院での治療後に施設に、ユウヒや他の犬たちは
新しい飼い主の元へ、とそれぞれが幸せになったことが何よりの救い。
