　バートンさんの絵本は、どれもこれも質が高くてハズレなし。
特に人の作り出した"もの"に"生命"を吹き込ませることに関しては、この方の右に出る絵本作家さんはいないのではないでしょうか。

　この本もそんなバートンさんの本領がいかんなく発揮されていております。

目も口も描かれていないはずのメーベルの喜怒哀楽が、手に取るように感じられ、思わず抱きしめたくなってしまいました。ライバルのビックジムもとっても魅力的。

　まだ小さい子どもにはお話そのものを、小学校小・中学年の子どもには社会の教材として1冊で二度楽しめる絵本です。

『ちいさいおうち』のバートンが、画家を目指す前にめざしていたのはバレリーナでした。その彼女がかよったバレエ学校がサンフランシスコにあり、「ケーブルカー廃止運動」を彼女は目の当たりにしたそうです。実際のお話が元となって描かれただけあり、バートン自身のよさが全て表れていると思います。

　実話を題材に、バートンが絵本にしたもの。バートンの暖かい人柄があらわれた絵と文がすばらしい。

　サンフランシスコのケーブルカー「メーベル」は、市民の生活に役立ち、また、市民から愛されてきた。しかし、「スピード」「進歩」「経済性」の名のもとに、市は廃止しようとする。それを知った市民は、なんとかケーブルカーを救いたいと、公共図書館で反対集会を開き、委員会をつくる。委員会の活動により、メーベルのことが広く知られ、世界中から手紙や電報が届き、廃止反対の意見が高まる。署名をあつめ、反対意見を市に提出し、結局、投票により、メーベルは救われる。

　読者は、大好きなメーベルが救われることをねがいながらドキドキしながら読み、みんなの力で救われてホッとする。本書は、!メーベルのことを通して、間接的に、草の根の市民運動のパワーを、子供にも大人にも教えてくれる。そして、本当に大切に思われることについては、あきらめないで、声に出す勇気を授けてくれる。
